InnerSound 2014 opens with one of the most renowned string quartets of the moment. ConTempo was founded in 1995 and has been a resident ensemble in Galway, Ireland for over a decade. Since 2014 it has become the state quartet of RTÉ, Ireland's National Public Service Broadcaster. Over 14 international prizes and over 1400 concerts in 46 countries (at Carnegie Hall, Berliner Philarmoniker, Theatre Chatelet in Paris, Tel Aviv Opera, Gedai Hall in Tokyo or Palazzo Quirinale in Roma) – ConTempo was named „the ABBA of classical music” and performed for personalities such as Pope John Paul II, Prince Charles or Nelson Mandela. They play classical, contemporary (over 40 world premieres in the past 3 years), jazz, pop, Baroque and Brazilian music with the same passion and virtuosity. During the last year, ConTempo had a successful tour with one of the most important works of the XXth century, Steve Reich’s Different Trains. They will reprise the piece at InnerSound, in the first concert of the Encounters in Time and Space series, that reunites musics from different eras and styles; in this case, Reich’s minimal-repetitive world meets Beethoven’s Great Fugue and Irish contemporary music (Jane O'Leary). Imagistic wizard Mihai Cucu, another Irish resident, will create a visual counterpoint for this sonic luxuriance. Cucu – film director, visual artist, photographer and painter – is a constant collaborator of Romanian and Irish composers, as well as a member of the Bucharest-based syncretic ensemble SeduCânt.
